Pareidolia Faces in Coffee

Updated: Apr 8, 2021

New section under photography.

Images of faces in coffee created by random drips from a coffee machine.

Our brains seem to be intent on finding faces everywhere - from clouds to tree bark - a phenomenon known as ‘Pareidolia Faces’.

This is not so surprising in such a social animal where the ability to differentiate between friend and foe could prove critical.

Research suggests that there are seven basic universal facial expressions: Happiness, Sadness, Anger, Surprise, Fear, Disgust and Contempt.

A relatively large area of our brains, the Fusiform Facial Area, is thought to be associated with the recognition of Faces and insult to this area can lead to a condition known as Prosopagnosia or Face Blindness.
